Helping Old Smiles Thrive: 4 Dental Hygiene Tips for Seniors

As you age, your body will change in certain ways. You’ve likely noticed that much yourself – muscles getting weaker, aching joints, etc. Still, you may not have known that advanced age puts you at risk of some dental issues. The good news is that your dentist has oral care advice for the elderly, which should keep your smile strong. Read on to learn about oral health issues elders can face and four great dental hygiene tips for seniors.

Dental Dangers for Seniors

With time and age, you’ll develop a higher risk of getting certain oral issues. Such conditions include the following:

Dry Mouth

In recent years, have you noticed your mouth feeling drier? You may be suffering from dry mouth if you have.

You see, getting older can lead to your mouth’s saliva drying up. Not only will your body produce less naturally, but you may take medications that alter your salivary glands. These factors can cause your mouth to dry up quickly, increasing your risk of cavities and bad breath.

Tooth/Root Decay

Along with a dry mouth, old age can put you in danger of tooth decay.  That’s a matter worth taking seriously.

Remember, gum tissue naturally recedes over the years. This process can expose your tooth roots to bacterial acids and other forces. Since these roots don’t have protective enamel, they’re more prone to decay than other tooth parts like the crown.

Gum Disease

Your teeth and breath aren’t the only things to look after. In the senior stage of life, you’ll also face a higher risk of getting gum disease.

The issue is that elements of old age may lead to gum disease. In particular, issues like plaque buildup, poor diets, anemia, and cancer can trigger infected gums. Given that fact,  pay attention to how your gums are doing and note whether they seem overly red, swollen, or sensitive.

Senior-Friendly Dental Hygiene Tips

Though seniors can face certain dental risks, there are ways to manage such dangers. Just remember to use the following tips and tricks:

  • See Your Dentist Often – Even if you wear dentures, regular dental checkups and cleanings will keep you a step ahead of oral health problems.
  • Don’t Use Tobacco – Especially as you age, tobacco use can raise the risk of tooth decay, oral cancer, and other health conditions.
  • Use Antiseptic Mouthwash – By rinsing with a good mouthwash at least once daily, you’ll reduce the presence of harmful bacteria in your mouth. That’ll protect you from plaque and gum disease.

Having learned these dental hygiene tips for seniors, remember to put them into practice. They’ll help you better enjoy your older years!
