Why You Shouldn’t Skip Your Dental Hygiene Appointment

July 26, 2021

During routine dental visits, your dentist and dental hygienist will check your teeth, gums and overall mouth for health. Your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and polished, removing plaque, tartar and staining. Certain tools will be used to clean above and below the gum line. Your routine dental visit will be recommended every 3-6 months, depending on the current health of your teeth and your dental needs. If you miss your dental hygiene appointment, you place yourself at risk of several different dental conditions.

Risk of Cavities

During your routine dental hygiene appointment, the health of your teeth will be assessed. If a cavity is forming, it can be caught in its early stages before it gets larger and can spread to other teeth. If you miss your dental hygiene appointments, you run the risk of developing cavities that go undiagnosed and can even turn into infections.

What are Night Guards and Why Are They Important?

July 19, 2021

Tooth clenching and grinding are prevalent oral habits that are classified as nighttime sleep motion disorders. Clenching and grinding can occur subconsciously during the day but most commonly occurs at night. Clenching is the aggressive biting down of the upper and lower jaws together, and grinding is when the jaws move aggressively across each other, causing friction on the tooth surfaces. Nightguards act as a buffer or cushion between the upper and lower teeth to prevent tooth-on tooth trauma.

How to Keep Baby Teeth Healthy

July 5, 2021

Did you know that baby teeth are essential for many reasons, including health, function and aesthetics? It is important to help keep your child’s baby teeth healthy and cavity-free. Baby teeth lost premature, either to cavities, infection or trauma, can lead to problems with the positioning and health of the future adult teeth.

Importance of Baby Teeth

– Help with talking, chewing, smiling, speaking and confidence

– Are used by the future adult teeth as placeholders, meaning the adult teeth use the roots of the baby teeth to guide them into the correct position

– Prevent shifting of adjacent and opposing teeth, meaning if a baby tooth is lost premature, the surrounding teeth can shift and affect the bite

6 Ways to Improve Bad Breath

June 24, 2021

Brushing and Flossing

Bad breath, also called “halitosis,” is most commonly caused by plaque build-up on your teeth and gum surfaces. Plaque consists of bacteria, which feeds on the sugars in your mouth. If plaque is not routinely cleaned off your teeth and gums, it leads to gum disease and cavities. Therefore, the more plaque you have on your teeth and gums, the more likely you are to experience bad breath. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once daily to remove plaque to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Cleaning Your Tongue

Your tongue is a rough surface that can harbour lots of bacteria. In addition, the top surface of your tongue is filled with thousands of taste buds from the back to the tip, which creates many crevices where plaque builds up. Make sure to clean your tongue daily with either your toothbrush or a tongue cleaner.

5 Amazing Benefits of Dental Implants

June 15, 2021

A dental implant is a replacement tooth that is used to fill the space of a missing tooth. Natural teeth can be lost due to decay, trauma, extraction, etc. A dental implant consists of a titanium screw inserted into the bone and a porcelain or ceramic crown on top. The screw is left to heal and integrate into the bone for 4-6 months before the permanent crown is placed. In the interim, a temporary crown can be placed on the screw to fill the space.

Best Option for Aesthetics and Function

Dental implants are the best option in many areas for replacing missing teeth both as they excel in aesthetics and function. Dental implants act, look and function just like natural teeth. Dental implants are also cleaned in the same way as natural teeth, brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Your dental hygienist will use a softer cleaning tool around the implant during your routine cleanings to prevent any microscopic scratches or scrapes.

Learn About Different Types of Whitening Treatment

There are two different kinds of staining that affect teeth. Extrinsic, or external staining, is staining that attaches to the surface of the teeth and can be manually removed. This type of staining is removed during routine dental cleanings. Intrinsic or internal staining is staining that affects the inner layers of the teeth and cannot be manually removed during a regular dental cleaning. Internal staining requires the help of a bleaching agent to access the inner layers of the tooth structure.

Toothpaste/Mouthwash

Many products can help prevent/reduce staining. These products will either target internal or external staining. Most whitening toothpaste will contain abrasive particles that help scrub off exterior staining, while some will contain a small degree of a whitening ingredient to help target internal staining. There are also whitening mouthwashes on the market that help to target internal staining. The effectiveness of these products varies, but the cost is relatively low.

How to Prevent Early Childhood Caries

June 1, 2021

In this day and age, children are at an increased risk of developing cavities from an early age. This is due to the abundance of and easy access to sweetened foods, coupled with misinformation and poor oral hygiene habits. Cavities can form on baby teeth upon the earliest eruption through the gums, which occurs around 5-10 months old. Early childhood caries occur at lightning speed and can cause severe distress for a child. The Canadian Dental Association considers early childhood cavities a significant public health problem. Early childhood caries can lead to pain, infection, loss of confidence, trouble biting and chewing and future issues with crowding of the adult teeth.

Learn How To Clean Between Your Teeth

May 25, 2021

Each tooth is like a box; they have 5 surfaces that require cleaning. By using a toothbrush, you are cleaning the top, front and back surfaces, but due to the diameter of the bristles, they are unable to access between the teeth. That means that if you are brushing your teeth but not using an interdental aid such as floss, you are missing nearly half the surfaces in your mouth! Bacteria are constantly forming on your tooth surfaces and even underneath your gums, and the same is true for between your teeth.

Gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums from the presence of oral bacteria, is thought to affect up to 90% of the population in varying severity. Gingivitis can lead to gum disease, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity and even loose teeth. Gingivitis can occur localized or generalized, and therefore it is important to clean all tooth surfaces to prevent it.
