Breast Cancer And Your Oral Health

Breast cancer ribbon being held The benefits of good oral health are vital for a number of reasons. Most people know common benefits such as fresh breath and healthy gums. However, a study published in the Journal of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology gives another reason for good oral health. The study shows that women with severe gum disease are up to three times more likely to develop breast cancer.

The study looked at women with severe gum disease, known as periodontitis or periodontal disease. Women with periodontal disease had two to three times more odds of developing breast cancer. However, the study did not look at women with mild or moderate gum disease, known as gingivitis. While some instances of breast cancer are associated with severe gum disease, the evidence does not show that gum disease causes breast cancer.

It is believed that inflammation from the infected gums can enter the circulatory system and affect breast tissue. The finding lends to the belief that oral health has an impact on other systems in the body. Other effects can result in gum disease include stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

What Can You Do?

Look for signs of gum disease. Common signs include red, swollen and bleeding gums, when cleaning your teeth, or eating. Constant bad breath may be another indication of gum disease. Once gum disease has advanced, common symptoms may become mild. Regular dental care prevents the disease from getting worse.

The good news is that mild to moderate gum disease is preventable, or reversible in most cases. A complete or full dental exam allows for a thorough assessment of your mouth, and oral health. After the assessment, your dental professional will prepare an individualized treatment plan. The treatment plan will get your oral health back on track, or maintain your oral health if it is already good.

Ensuring that you have regular dental cleanings helps to prevent gum disease, and helps diseased gums to begin the healing process. However, regularly flossing and brushing at home makes a bigger overall impact.

If you haven’t had a dental exam or dental cleaning in a while, contact us to schedule your appointment. We will help you get your oral health back on track.
