Are there members of your family who need access to oral healthcare benefits? A healthy smile can make a difference in a person’s overall well-being, which is why the Canadian Dental Care Plan recently announced that it is making applications available to eligible patients who are ages 65 and older as well as children under the age of 18. Keep reading to learn more about the details of this plan and how you or your loved ones can apply.
Who is Eligible to Apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
In June 2024, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) announced that its federal program would now be available to specific age groups, including those under 18 and those 65 years of age and older.
Additionally, adults who can produce an applicable disability tax credit certificate can also apply. In 2025, all other eligible Canadian residents can enroll for coverage with the CDCP.
What are the Criteria for Eligibility?
As a government dental benefit, there are strict criteria as to who can receive assistance as part of the CDCP program. For example:
- You must be a Canadian resident
- You must have filed taxes in the previous year
- You must have an adjusted household net income of $90,000 or less
- You must not have existing dental insurance or have access to obtain benefits through your employer or school
It is possible, however, to be eligible for the CDCP if you also receive coverage as part of another government dental program.
How is the CDCP Program Different from Private Dental Insurance?
Unlike private dental coverage, which allows you to choose any available dentist and file a claim for reimbursement, the CDCP is designed to provide everyone with the same type of coverage. Individuals are responsible for co-payments as well as paying any additional fees not covered by the CDCP.
If your income is below $70,000 a year, coverage for eligible services is 100%. If it falls between $70,000 and $79,999, coverage is 60%. If your adjusted household net income is between $80,000 and $89,999, the CDPC will pay 40% of the total cost of care.
When reviewing your plan’s informational packet, you’ll find that not all treatments are covered but instead, some require preauthorization. The CDCP is responsible for determining whether your treatment is approved based on your oral health history and any medical conditions you might have.
Getting the oral healthcare you and your family need is now possible thanks to the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Make sure to apply so that you can begin taking advantage of your available benefits and start living life with a healthier smile.
