The most common type of crossbite involves upper teeth that are situated behind the lower teeth when the mouth is closed or when biting down. It may occur when the lower and upper jaws are not properly aligned. It may also be due to excessive crowding of the teeth, resulting in poor alignment.

Effects of A Crossbite

When a crossbite is present, it leads to premature wearing of the teeth involved. Front teeth can wear especially quickly if they are affected. Front teeth are also at a greater risk of injury if trauma occurs, due to their improper alignment. Having teeth in the back of mouth that are affected opens the door for potential jaw growth irregularities. Jaw growth irregularities can result in other issues such as jaw pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines. Left untreated, gum disease and bone loss may occur due to difficultly keeping affected area clean.

Treatment Options

Treatment plans are dependent on each patient’s specific dental needs. A common treatment is the use of orthodontics, which includes the use of traditional metal braces or clear invisible aligner trays (Invisalign). When the crossbite is caused by crowding of teeth in the mouth, some teeth may need to be extracted to make create room in the mouth. Once this additional space has been created, the use of orthodontic treatment follows, in order to straighten the properly align the teeth. In severe cases, jaw surgery is needed to properly fix jaw bone irregularities.

If you experience the symptoms or effects of a crossbite, talk to your dentist or dental professional at your next visit. They can assess your oral condition and develop a personalized treatment plan. This will help to maintain your oral health and prevent potential issues later on in life.
