How Do You Know If You Need A Dental Crown in Brampton?

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown, or a “cap” as it is sometimes referred to, is an important part of restorative dentistry. It is a hollow, tooth-like restoration which is placed over a natural tooth, completely covering it. It can improve aesthetics and give strength and integrity back to a compromised tooth.

Reasons you may need a dental crown

Dental implant- If you are getting a dental implant, a dental crown will replace the top part of the missing tooth. The crown attaches to a metal post that has been securely placed in the jawbone.

Large filling– A tooth with a large filling loses strength and is more prone to breaking. A dental crown can increase the strength of the tooth and make breaking less likely.

Root canal– A tooth that has root canal will be more brittle and prone to breaking. A dental crown is usually recommended after a tooth receives root canal treatment.

Dental bridge– This tooth replacement option requires putting dental crowns on the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. These crowns are connected by an artificial tooth which fills in the space.

Aesthetics– A dental crown can be used to improve the look of a tooth that is broken, discolored or otherwise aesthetically unappealing. Usually this is more of a concern for front teeth. One or more teeth may need dental crowns or veneers to achieve the smile you want.

If you have a compromised tooth that has a high likelihood of breaking, your dentist may suggest a dental crown as the best long-term solution. Not all teeth that break can be fixed, sometimes they need to be extracted. Dental crowns can lengthen the lifespan of a compromised tooth, making it less likely that you will lose it.

What are dental crowns made of?

Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials. The location, aesthetics, strength, durability and patient-specific considerations such as metal sensitivities will all be factors in determining what material to use. Some commonly used materials for dental crowns include:

  • Porcelain
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Ceramic
  • Gold
  • Stainless steel
  • Resin

What to expect when getting a dental crown:

Once it has been decided that a dental crown is being done, the procedure will take two separate dental office visits.

First visit:
Your dentist will prepare your tooth to receive the crown. This involves filing it down and shaping it so that the crown can fit over. Impressions and a mold of your teeth will be made and sent to the dental lab that is making your crown. Usually, a temporary crown will be put on while you wait for your permanent crown to be completed. Second visit:

When your permanent crown is complete, you will return to have it cemented into place. The dentist will make sure the shade and shape of the crown are perfect and make any adjustments needed to your bite.

Caring for your dental crown:

Dental crowns need to be cared for just like your natural teeth. Diligent brushing and flossing will keep the dental crown free of the plaque bacteria that can cause decay and gum disease. Avoid using abrasive whitening toothpastes as they can leave tiny surface scratches and dull the shine of the crown.
