Candida (or fungus) is a normal organism in the mouth, but oral candidiasis is a condition where the fungus accumulates in more significant amounts on the surfaces of the mouth. The layman’s term for oral candidiasis is oral thrush.
Signs and Symptoms of Oral Thrush
- White or off white lesions on the tongue, inside of the cheeks, the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils and throat
- Lesions have a cottage cheese-like appearance and are slightly raised
- Sore tissues that may have a burning feeling
- Red tissues
- Difficulty eating and swallowing
- Bleeding gums
- If breastfeeding, mom may experience dry, cracked, red nipples
What Causes Oral Thrush?
The funguses that cause oral thrush already live in your mouth, in a healthy number. When your immune system isn’t working properly, it can allow these fungi to build and accumulate, leading to oral thrush.
What Are The Risk Factors For Oral Thrush?
- Weakened immunity, such as in infants and older adults. Also, some medical conditions can suppress the immune system such as cancer, organ transplant and HIV.
- Diabetes patients are at a higher risk of oral thrush because of the imbalance of sugars in the saliva. Sugar encourages the growth of fungus.
- Medications such as prednisone, corticosteroids that are inhaled or antibiotics can all cause oral thrush
- Oral conditions such as the use of dentures and having a dry mouth
What Is The Treatment for Oral Thrush?
The most crucial part of treating oral thrush is to stop the spread of the fungus. In both children and adults, antifungal medication may be recommended. Antifungal medications come in lozenges, tablets or mouth rinse. It is essential to address the underlying cause of oral thrush for proper treatment. Otherwise, it may return.
Prevention of Oral Thrush
- It is crucial to maintain a healthy mouth by brushing twice a day and flossing daily
- If you suffer from a dry mouth, make sure to use a salivary substitute product.
- If you wear dentures, be sure to remove them nightly and clean them adequately
- Have any underlying health issues treated
- If you have diabetes, be sure to maintain your blood sugar level
- See your dentist regularly
