5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile in 2024

If 2023 wasn’t the best year for your smile – whether you stopped flossing consistently or you developed a cavity or two – there’s good news: there’s no time like the present to implement good dental care habits! Over the next few weeks, commit to writing down some goals that will keep your teeth and gums decay and infection-free. Unsure where to start? Then read on for five New Year’s resolutions for a healthy smile in 2024.

1. Floss Each Evening

Did you know that 1 in 3 Americans never floss? If you’re one of them, then food particles and plaque can get trapped between your teeth and along your gumline, increasing your chances of tooth decay and gum disease in the process. That’s why it’s important to commit to completing this oral hygiene step every evening – no exceptions!

2. Eat More Vegetables

At the beginning of the year, it’s common for people to focus on what they want to remove from their diet. Instead, focus on what you can add, like vegetables! In addition to being low in sugar, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and the like give your body the nutrients it needs to fight off infections and keep your jawbone strong.

3. Replace Your Toothbrush Every Three Months

Be honest… Do you wait to replace your toothbrush until the bristles are frayed? If so, then make it a goal to replace your toothbrush (or toothbrush head) every three months. An easy way to remember is to set a reminder on your phone or put a sticky note on your bathroom mirror! It’s also helpful to have a backup toothbrush on hand, so try to keep a few in your medicine cabinet.

4. Get a Checkup and Cleaning Twice a Year

Tooth decay, oral cancer, and gum disease are just a few dental problems that can develop, even if you consistently brush and floss. So, make it a priority to visit your dentist for a checkup and cleaning twice a year. That way, any oral health concerns that do arise are caught and treated in the early stages.

5. Brush for a Full Two Minutes

In short, brushing consistently is just the first step. In order to thoroughly remove food particles and other debris from your teeth, you need to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste for two full minutes each morning and evening. Try using the timer on your phone – it will help prevent you from going on autopilot!
