Myths vs. Facts: Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan

Patient and dentist talkingThe Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a wonderful provision that makes it easier for many families to enjoy top-quality oral health services at an affordable price. However, as with any government program, it comes with quite a few details and stipulations. Do you understand how it works? In this blog post, you will discover the truth behind some common misconceptions about the CDCP.

Myth #1: Everyone Qualifies for the CDCP

In the past, there were age restrictions on who could qualify for assistance through the CDCP. Starting this year, though, age restrictions have been removed. That does not mean that absolutely everyone is eligible for coverage. To take advantage of the CDCP, your adjusted household net income must be below $90,000 a year. You should also be unable to obtain dental benefits from other sources, such as an employer or pension.

Myth #2: You Can Visit Any Dentist to Use CDCP Benefits

Dentists and other professionals in the oral healthcare field are not required to participate in the CDCP. They may opt-in to the program or accept claims on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, before you consent to any treatment plan, you should be sure to check with your care team to learn whether they work with the CDCP. You should be well-informed about your financial obligation so you are not unpleasantly surprised when you are billed.

Myth #3: All Dental Services Are Covered

It would certainly be nice if all dental services were covered under the CDCP, but sadly, that is not the case. There are frequency limitations on some services, and other treatments may only be covered if you get pre-authorization. You should check out your CDCP Dental Benefits Guide for more specific information on how coverage works.

Myth #4: The CDCP Completely Covers Costs

The amount of coverage you receive depends on your household income. If your family makes more than $70,000 per year, you may have a co-payment of 40 – 60%. Also, keep in mind that the CDCP only covers treatments up to a certain fee amount. If your dentist charges more than what the CDCP deems reasonable, you will be responsible for paying the difference.

Myth #5: Enrollment in the CDCP Is Automatic

Even if you are eligible for coverage, you are still required to apply for CDCP benefits every year. It can take a few months to receive approval. Prior to that, you should not expect to receive any coverage.

The CDCP is a great resource, but you need to understand the basics of how it works! Take some time to familiarize yourself with its details so you can use it to your greatest advantage.
