Invisalign is a tooth alignment process, much like braces, that gradually straightens your teeth and aligns your bite. It involves a series of clear plastic aligners that are worn for 1 to 2 weeks each, before switching to the next aligner set in the treatment series. The clear aligners apply slow, gradual pressure on the teeth in strategic areas to change the positioning. “Attachments” are bonded onto some tooth surfaces to allow the aligners to have traction when moving the teeth. Invisalign treatment, on average, takes around 18 months, but each case is different, and the more complex the case is, the more time that may be needed.
How Does It Work?
Your first appointment will be a consultation with your Invisalign trained dental provider to get an idea of the results you are looking to achieve. Impressions are then taken of your teeth and then sent to the Invisalign lab to fabricate an extensive, detailed treatment plan and to create a series of clear aligner trays. During your next visit, attachments are bonded onto your teeth based on the treatment plan to help the aligner trays to create movement. You will then see your Invisalign trained dentist or orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks to change your aligner trays and check your progress.
Keeping Your Teeth Healthy With Invisalign
Since you can take the aligner trays out before brushing and flossing your teeth, then put them back after, it is much easier to clean your teeth compared to traditional metal braces. It is vital to wear the Invisalign trays as much as you can. You should only take them out when you eat, drink and clean your teeth. The more compliant you are with wearing your trays, the faster the procedure and the better the results. As usual, it is vital to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
Since Invisalign trays may block some salivary flow to your teeth, make sure to thoroughly rinse your mouth after eating or drinking to reduce your risk of cavities. Take care of your aligners by gently brushing them with a separate toothbrush and rinsing them in lukewarm water. Never use hot water on your aligners, or they might warp due to the heat.
