Why You Need To Brush Your Teeth Before Bed

We all know the recommendation, brushing at least twice a day and always before bed. But do we all know why the essential toothbrushing time of the day is the one before bed? In this article, we will explore why brushing before bed is a must and the consequences of neglecting that nighttime brush.  

What Happens Overnight 

Overnight, if bacteria (called plaque) is left on your teeth from the foods you’ve eaten and beverages you’ve drunk throughout the day, they are left to accumulate and spread throughout your mouth. Bacteria is alive and can be seen on a microscopic level. Bacteria survive in colonies and continue to multiply and expand if not manually removed. By brushing and flossing your teeth, you are manually disrupting these colonies of bacteria and preventing them from multiplying and spreading in your mouth. Nighttime presents the perfect conditions for bacteria to attack your teeth and gums. Saliva helps cleanse your mouth of food debris and bacteria, but your salivary flow slows down, reducing this function while you sleep. 

What Does Bacteria Do? 

If left on your teeth and gums, bacteria will cause problems. Bacteria is directly responsible for cavities, as it produces acids that attack your teeth and weaken the enamel (the outer structure of the tooth.) Bacteria is also directly responsible for causing gum disease. Gum disease starts as an inflammation of your gums, called gingivitis. Gingivitis presents itself as red, puffy and tender gums. If left untreated, gingivitis then progresses into periodontitis, which affects the surrounding structures of your teeth, such as the bone and ligament. Periodontitis can cause loss of gum and bone tissue, mobile teeth and even tooth loss. 

What to do Before Bed

Make sure to brush your teeth, either with a manual or electric toothbrush, for at least 2 minutes. Use fluoride toothpaste to help reduce cavity risk. You can also help by flossing your teeth before bed to dislodge any bacteria accumulating between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t access. Make sure not to eat or drink anything aside from water after your last brush before you go to sleep.
