5 Amazing Benefits of Dental Implants

June 15, 2021

A dental implant is a replacement tooth that is used to fill the space of a missing tooth. Natural teeth can be lost due to decay, trauma, extraction, etc. A dental implant consists of a titanium screw inserted into the bone and a porcelain or ceramic crown on top. The screw is left to heal and integrate into the bone for 4-6 months before the permanent crown is placed. In the interim, a temporary crown can be placed on the screw to fill the space.

Best Option for Aesthetics and Function

Dental implants are the best option in many areas for replacing missing teeth both as they excel in aesthetics and function. Dental implants act, look and function just like natural teeth. Dental implants are also cleaned in the same way as natural teeth, brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Your dental hygienist will use a softer cleaning tool around the implant during your routine cleanings to prevent any microscopic scratches or scrapes.

Learn About Different Types of Whitening Treatment

June 9, 2021

There are two different kinds of staining that affect teeth. Extrinsic, or external staining, is staining that attaches to the surface of the teeth and can be manually removed. This type of staining is removed during routine dental cleanings. Intrinsic or internal staining is staining that affects the inner layers of the teeth and cannot be manually removed during a regular dental cleaning. Internal staining requires the help of a bleaching agent to access the inner layers of the tooth structure.

Toothpaste/Mouthwash

Many products can help prevent/reduce staining. These products will either target internal or external staining. Most whitening toothpaste will contain abrasive particles that help scrub off exterior staining, while some will contain a small degree of a whitening ingredient to help target internal staining. There are also whitening mouthwashes on the market that help to target internal staining. The effectiveness of these products varies, but the cost is relatively low.

How to Prevent Early Childhood Caries

June 1, 2021

In this day and age, children are at an increased risk of developing cavities from an early age. This is due to the abundance of and easy access to sweetened foods, coupled with misinformation and poor oral hygiene habits. Cavities can form on baby teeth upon the earliest eruption through the gums, which occurs around 5-10 months old. Early childhood caries occur at lightning speed and can cause severe distress for a child. The Canadian Dental Association considers early childhood cavities a significant public health problem. Early childhood caries can lead to pain, infection, loss of confidence, trouble biting and chewing and future issues with crowding of the adult teeth.

Learn How To Clean Between Your Teeth

May 25, 2021

Each tooth is like a box; they have 5 surfaces that require cleaning. By using a toothbrush, you are cleaning the top, front and back surfaces, but due to the diameter of the bristles, they are unable to access between the teeth. That means that if you are brushing your teeth but not using an interdental aid such as floss, you are missing nearly half the surfaces in your mouth! Bacteria are constantly forming on your tooth surfaces and even underneath your gums, and the same is true for between your teeth.

Gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums from the presence of oral bacteria, is thought to affect up to 90% of the population in varying severity. Gingivitis can lead to gum disease, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity and even loose teeth. Gingivitis can occur localized or generalized, and therefore it is important to clean all tooth surfaces to prevent it.

PERIODONTITIS & COVID‐19 COMPLICATIONS LINKED IN NEW RESEARCH

April 26, 2021

New research in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology has shown that COVID-19 complications are linked to oral health. Managing gum disease is essential for avoiding COVID-19 related complications. Gum disease triggers an inflammatory response in the body, so maintaining healthy teeth and gums is vital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Periodontal disease or periodontitis can cause bleeding gums, bad breath and eventually loss of teeth if it is left untreated. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and COVID-19 complications. COVID-19 complications resulting from gum disease showed higher levels of biomarkers that are associated with worsened disease outcomes, such as white blood cell levels, D‐dimer, and c-reactive protein. Patients with severe gum disease in the study were at least 3 times more likely to experience COVID‐19 complications, including death, ICU admission, and the need for assisted ventilation.
